Documentation

Practical notes for free Minecraft Java on Mantory. Modest spare servers in Frankfurt. Panel, backups, and DDoS sit in front; you still run the world.

First boot

Create a free world, panel login, Start, and the Minecraft EULA.

Create a free account, then create a world in the Mantory panel. Confirm the type (Paper is the default for plugins) and the connect address on Overview.

Press Start. The first time, Mantory asks you to accept Mojang's Minecraft EULA (https://aka.ms/MinecraftEULA). Accept writes eula.txt, then starts the world. Cancel leaves it stopped. Watch Console until it prints Done. First boot can take a minute while it generates the world.

Join from Minecraft Java using the address on Overview. If the port is not 25565, use IP:port. Stop the world before you swap jars, upload a world, or edit server.properties. Console is the source of truth: if it is still starting, players will time out.

Overview

Live usage, connect address, and the free plan card.

Overview is the status page. The free plan card sits at the top: 2 GB RAM, one world, idle sleep. There is no Renew and no Auto-renew on a free world. Memory, CPU, and disk meters update while the world is running. Uptime and network counters sit under the meters. Type, RAM, disk, and location are on the right.

Copy the connect address from Overview or Settings. Always share the full IP:port, not an old screenshot.

Console

Live log and commands. Same place you whitelist and op players.

Console streams the live log. Type commands at the bottom the way you would in a local terminal: whitelist add, op, say, stop. Up and down arrows walk command history.

If Console stays on Connecting, wait a few seconds and refresh. The world must be starting or online for new log lines. Start from the header if the badge says offline.

Files

Browse, edit, upload, and download world files in the panel.

Files is a folder browser for this world. Open plugins, mods, or world from here. You can create folders, upload, download, rename, delete, and edit text files such as server.properties, YML, and JSON.

Stop the world before you replace a world folder or a jar. Drag and drop works for uploads. Big zips are fine; unpack them so the folder that contains level.dat is the world directory the jar expects, often world/.

SFTP

SFTP only. Host, port 2022, username, and a password reset.

SFTP is SSH File Transfer. It is not plain FTP. In Cyberduck or FileZilla, choose SFTP (not FTP or FTP-SSL) and use the port on the tab. That port is 2022 on Mantory nodes. Connecting with FTP produces an interoperability error and a line that starts with SSH-2.0.

Copy Protocol (SFTP), Host, Port, and Username from the tab. There is no stored password to read. Reset password creates a new one. Copy it now. That password is shared by every world on the same Mantory account. Reset again if you lose it.

Backups

Create, download, restore, and delete snapshots.

The Backups tab lists snapshots for this world. Create a named backup before a risky plugin update or a version change. Restore overwrites live files; download a copy first if you might want the current world as well as the old one.

Slot count is on the tab. Keep your own off-site copy of world/ plus plugins or mods for anything you cannot recreate. After you remove a world, we keep files only for a short download window (see Privacy).

Startup

Startup command, Java runtime, and extra variables.

Startup shows the command this software runs, plus extra variables that are not the Minecraft version. Pick a Java runtime if more than one is listed. After a Java change, restart once and read the first console lines: they print the Java version the process actually got.

Minecraft version is not typed here. Use the Minecraft tab. If the console dies immediately with UnsupportedClassVersionError, the jar is newer than the JDK. Switch the Java runtime, then restart.

Minecraft software and version

Change Paper, Vanilla, Fabric, and the other types. Then pick a version.

The Minecraft tab can change the server software itself (Paper, Vanilla, Purpur, Spigot, Fabric, Forge, Quilt when that type is installed on the node), not only the version inside one type. Changing software reinstalls server files. Worlds, plugins, and mods may be incompatible. Confirm the warning, and take a backup first if you want to keep the current files. A type is greyed only when that software is not installed on the node.

The version selector stays searchable. Pick a version and save. Builds and install details stay in the background. You are not asked to type a build number.

Restart after you save a version. After a software change, wait for the install to finish, then Start. If Start asks for the Minecraft EULA again, accept it. Players must join with a client that the server accepts.

Downgrading a world is unsafe. Going from 1.20 to 1.21, or from 1.21 to a 26.x drop, is normal. Going backwards corrupts chunks. Take a backup, then change version up, not down. Mods and plugins must match the software and version you pick.

server.properties has a form for MOTD, slots, view distance, whitelist, and online-mode. Restart to apply most keys. Plugins and mods live on their own tab.

EULA on Start

Minecraft will not boot until you accept Mojang's EULA.

New Minecraft processes stop until eula.txt contains eula=true. When you press Start or Restart, the panel checks that file. If it is missing or false, a modal links to the Minecraft EULA. Accept writes the file, then starts the world. Cancel leaves it stopped.

Reinstall can replace files. If Start asks again, accept again. This is Mojang's license, not a Mantory extra.

Databases

Create a MySQL database for plugins that need one.

The Databases tab lists MySQL databases for this world. Create one if a plugin needs it. Host, port, username, and password are on the card. Reveal or copy the password. Rotate password makes a new one.

If the tab says databases are not available on this node yet, the node does not have a database host. That is not a broken plugin. Open a support ticket if you need MySQL on that world.

Settings

Rename, connect address, reinstall, and remove.

Settings holds the display name and the connect address. Free worlds have no Renew, Auto-renew, or expiry mail.

Reinstall downloads a fresh jar and can wipe world files. Remove this world stops the game and takes it off your panel. You can then create another free world (still one at a time).

Type the world name to confirm destructive actions. There is no refund path because nothing is charged. See the Payments page.

Mods and plugins

Own tab. Plugins on Paper family, mods on Fabric, Forge, Quilt.

Mods and plugins are a separate tab, not inside Minecraft. On Paper, Spigot, or Purpur the tab is Plugins. On Fabric, Forge, or Quilt it is Mods. Vanilla shows Mods & Plugins and explains that it has no catalog folder.

Search the catalog and install the latest file that matches this Minecraft version. Plugin jars go in /plugins. Mod jars go in /mods. You can also upload your own jar or open the folder in Files. Restart after you install.

The catalog is Modrinth only in this first version: it does not pull Hangar or SpigotMC, and it does not auto-install extra dependencies.

How to cancel

Free worlds do not bill. How to remove a world.

Mantory is free. Creating a world does not start a subscription and does not take a card. There is no Renew and no Auto-renew on a free world.

To delete the world: Settings, Remove this world, type the name. That stops the node and removes it from the panel. Download a backup first if you want the files. You can then create a new free world.

Paper, Vanilla, Purpur, Spigot, Fabric, Forge, Quilt

Which jar to run when you want plugins, mods, or none.

Vanilla is unmodified Java Edition. Use it for a clean Survival world, Realms-style play, or when a datapack is all you need. You cannot load Bukkit, Spigot, or Paper plugins on Vanilla.

Paper is the usual Mantory choice. It is a Spigot fork with better tick performance, useful config, and the plugin API almost every public plugin expects. If a forum thread says Spigot plugin, Paper will run it.

Spigot is the older plugin API. Pick it only when a plugin author still tests against Spigot and not Paper. For a new server, Paper is the better default.

Purpur is a Paper fork with extra gameplay knobs (more gamerules, more entity options). Use it when you already know you want those knobs. Plugins built for Paper almost always load on Purpur. If something breaks, switch back to Paper before you file a ticket.

Fabric, Forge, and Quilt are mod loaders. Players need the same loader. Quilt usually runs Fabric mods. Switch these from the Minecraft tab the same way you switch Paper and Vanilla.

You pick the type at order time, or change it later on the Minecraft tab. Changing type reinstalls server files. Plugin folders from Paper will do nothing on Vanilla, and Forge mods will not load on Paper.

Plugins vs mods

Paper plugins are not Forge mods. Do not mix loaders.

Plugins (Paper, Spigot, Purpur) are jars you drop in the plugins folder. They hook the server. Players join with a normal Minecraft client. No Fabric or Forge install on the player side.

Mods need a mod loader on the server and the same loader on every player. Fabric is lighter and updates faster. Forge is what most large public modpacks still ship. The server jar, the mods folder, and the player installer must match: same loader, same Minecraft version, same mod list.

You cannot run Paper plugins and Forge mods on one process. A plugin for Fabric is a server-side Fabric mod, not a Bukkit jar. If you want LuckPerms plus a tech modpack, that is two different stacks. Pick one.

On Mantory, the free plan can run Paper, Vanilla, Purpur, Spigot, Fabric, Forge, or Quilt. From the Plugins or Mods tab, search the catalog and install the latest file that matches your version, or upload a jar. The catalog is Modrinth only in this first version: it does not pull Hangar or SpigotMC, and it does not auto-install extra dependencies. If you upload a pack by zip, unpack it so the mods folder sits next to the server jar, not inside a second nested folder.

How much RAM

The free tier is 2 GB. Plugins and view distance spend RAM.

Minecraft uses RAM for chunks, entities, and the JVM. More players help only if they stay near each other. The free tier is 2 GB. A quiet few-player SMP or a light Paper list can work. A 40-player world with WorldGuard, CoreProtect, and a high view-distance will not.

Modpacks are greedier than plugins. If a pack page says 8 GB minimum, do not start it on the free tier and open a lag ticket. Lower view-distance and simulation-distance first.

There is no extra RAM slider and no paid upgrade on the free tier. A paid plan may come later. Until then, keep the plugin list short.

Connecting with IP and port

Java uses address:port. Default port is 25565.

In Minecraft Java: Multiplayer, Add Server, paste the address from Overview. If the port is 25565 you can omit it. Any other port must be in the address as 203.0.113.10:25566 (example format).

Bedrock (phones, consoles, Windows Bedrock) is a different protocol. These worlds are Java. A Bedrock player needs Geyser/Floodgate on Paper plus the Bedrock UDP port. That is an extra setup, not the default.

If friends time out but you can join, they may be on the wrong address, an outdated client, or a school network that blocks the port. Have them try the raw IP:port. Check Console for a join line when you connect. If Console never sees you, the address is wrong or the process is not listening.

Whitelist, ops, and online-mode

Lock the world before you post the IP.

For a private SMP, set white-list=true in server.properties on the Minecraft tab and restart. Then run whitelist add <username> in Console for each player. Ops are separate: op <username> for build perms. Do not op people you would not give SFTP to.

online-mode=true (default) checks Mojang/Microsoft auth. Keep it on unless you know you need Geyser offline tricks or a proxy that handles auth in front. See the offline-mode warning below.

If a player is not whitelisted, they are not on the list or they changed name after a Microsoft account rename. Run whitelist list and add the current name. UUID-based lists survive renames. If you edit white-list.json by hand, take a backup first.

Upload a world

Stop the server, replace the world folder, start again.

Stop the process. In Files, download a copy of the current world folder first (world, plus world_nether and world_the_end on a standard overworld).

Upload your zip. Unpack it so the folder that contains level.dat is the world directory the jar expects (often world/). A zip that unpacks to world/world/level.dat will generate a new empty map. If Console says it is preparing spawn area for a world you thought you uploaded, the path is nested wrong.

Match the server version to the world. A 1.21 world on 1.20 Paper will fail. Datapacks sit in world/datapacks. For Fabric/Forge, also copy the config folders the pack needs, not only the region files.

Java worlds are not Bedrock .mcworld saves. Convert them with a dedicated tool before upload. After start, op yourself and fly to your old spawn to confirm chunks loaded.

DDoS basics

Filtering is included. It is not a magic never-lag switch.

Mantory sits behind the Templass path in Frankfurt. Volumetric junk toward the node is filtered before it hits your process. You do not buy a separate mitigation SKU.

A bot raid that actually joins as Minecraft players is not a network DDoS. Use a whitelist, auth plugins, or a proxy with rate limits. If Console shows hundreds of connected lines, that is application abuse, not a missing DDoS checkbox.

If the server is unreachable for everyone and Status still shows the node up, open a ticket with the time (UTC), the IP:port, and whether Console is still printing. Do not rotate the IP on your own unless we ask. Friends will lose the address.

Java version

Modern Paper wants a current JDK. Packs pin their own.

Current Paper and Vanilla builds expect a current JDK (Java 21 or newer, depending on the drop). Older 1.16-1.17 packs often want Java 8 or 11. Startup has a Java runtime picker when more than one image is available.

Do not install a second Java from a random apt snippet. Use the picker. After a change, restart once and read the first 30 console lines.

Forge packs sometimes ship a start script that ignores our memory flags. Prefer the panel jar and flags over a custom .sh unless the pack documents a required installer.

Offline-mode warning

online-mode=false turns off Mojang auth. Anyone can spoof a name.

Set online-mode=false only if you understand the trade. The server will not ask Microsoft who a player is. A griefing client can join as your admin name and use your permissions if those perms are name-based.

Cracked-player communities, some Geyser setups, and some reverse proxies ask for offline mode. If you do it, put a real auth plugin in front (for example a login plugin, or a velocity/bungee layer that authenticates) and never op a name you have not locked down.

Mantory still allows the flag. Abuse, spam bots, and stolen-OP tickets on offline servers are on you. We will not treat that as a panel defect. German and EU law still apply: offline mode is not a way to host stolen accounts or illegal content.

Performance tips

View distance, farm density, and plugin choice beat a RAM upgrade.

Lower view-distance and simulation-distance in server.properties before you buy more RAM. 8/6 is plenty for SMP. 12/12 with 40 players will tank a 4 GB box.

Pre-gen the world (Chunky on Paper, or a pack's pregen) so first exploration does not hitch. Put farms you do not need far from spawn or in a closed spawn chunks setup.

Spark (Paper) and /timings pastes tell you if a plugin or a hopper line is the problem. If the console spam is a broken plugin looping an exception, remove that jar. More threads will not help.

Mantory runs on modest spare servers in Frankfurt. There is no CPU model to buy up to. If TPS is still low after view-distance and a Spark report, cut the plugin list. Paste the Spark link in a ticket rather than a one-line lag report.

What support covers

We run the node and the panel. You run the world.

We help with panel login, power, Java runtime, backups, DDoS path, disk, and "the process will not start" when Console shows a host-side error. There is no billing or money-back path on the free tier.

We do not build your plugin list, port a 1.8 kit PvP setup, or debug a 300-mod pack that crashes in a mixin. We can read a crash report and tell you which jar to remove. Community Discord and Modrinth/Hangar pages are faster for gameplay config.

Include: server name, what you changed last, full console crash (not a screenshot of the last line), Spark or timings if it is lag, and whether it started after a version switch. That cuts a day off the back-and-forth.
